Cutting pattern for flexible sheet material
This living hinge algorithm was developed for the early stages of Studio Ini's Urban imprint installation for A/D/O by MINI at NYCxDesign 2019. The algorithm takes a line file and generates a living hinge on each of the edges. When the generated pattern is watterjetted out of sheet of rigid material it becomes flexible due to the auxetic nature of the cuts. The DXF files generated are ready for use on any type of CNC machine. Earlier stages of this project also looked at using line expansion, reaction diffusion and shortest path algorithms to generate flexible cutting patterns.
